沙巴体育our special school in dien ban, quang nam province, has finally opened again after vietnam’s second lockdown, and as well as welcoming our 70 regular students back, we have welcomed 15 more. these children come with a variety of stories, all of them needing help.
we have little mac, who has physical disabilities caused by cerebral palsy. his cognitive ability is good and he will do well and a full therapy programme to support him, as well as an academic education. one of our physio outpatients has joined us full time: phuc, who is 11 years old, has a congenital muscular disorder which makes him so physically weak he cannot walk, and sometimes has difficulty breathing. he is extremely bright but too ill to go to mainstream school and his health has been too poor to even join us full time until now. he has immediately entered our mainstream class and told me, this morning, in english, how happy he was to be here. one of our new students is a 12 year old girl called la. we do not usually take older new students, as our emphasis is on early intervention. but la started out in our programme as a baby because she had club feet. she then went into the mainstream system, but has returned to us now, as she has a mild learning difficulty and has been so mercilessly bullied about this and her walking that she has lost all confidence and given up on talking.
one of the greatest things we do at our school (and we do many!) is to restore children’s confidence. we are a safe haven for so many little lives and a source of hope for their families. we are not alone in struggling to stay open during the pandemic, but if you are able to support our very special school and the beautiful children who attend it and who have nowhere else to turn to for help, i hope that you will consider helping them, in this place that many of us have made our home.
